For centuries, oak wood has stood for unsurpassed durability, mechanical strength, and an expressive pore pattern. With a raw density of approx. 0.69 g/cm³ and a Brinell hardness of 34 N/mm², oak is one of the domestic hardwoods with the highest resilience. The physical properties make oak wood resistant to impact and scratching, which is why we particularly recommend it for high-traffic areas such as lobbies, hotel corridors, and conference rooms.
The Swelling and Shrinking Behavior of Oak Wood
An essential physical parameter in the processing of solid wood is the differential shrinkage. For oak, this is approx. 0.26% tangentially and approx. 0.15% radially per 1% change in wood moisture content. This means that oak wood exhibits a moderate but moisture-dependent swelling and shrinking behavior (wood movement). To prevent cracking, joint formation, or warping in the interior, the wood moisture content during production of our 3D panels is precisely set to 7% to 9%. This corresponds to the equilibrium moisture content in modern, centrally heated living spaces. Thanks to this climate conditioning, the wood remains dimensionally stable and retains its geometric precision.
Moisture Resistance and Natural Tannins
Oak wood has an exceptionally high natural content of tannic acids (tannins). These organic compounds act as a natural defense against fungal attack and wood-destroying insects. In terms of moisture resistance, this means that oak can also be used in rooms with periodically increased humidity – such as well-ventilated bathrooms or wellness areas. The prerequisite is that there is no direct contact with liquid water (standing water) and the wood is protected by open-pored hard-wax oils. However, tannic acids can lead to blue-black discoloration when they come into contact with iron ions (e.g., through non-rustproof screws or tool wear), which is why only high-quality stainless steel screws may be used when installing our wall systems.
Artisanal Finishing with Natural Oils and Hard-Wax
The surfaces of our oak panels are prepared in several sanding steps with fine grit to optimally expose the pore structure. The subsequent treatment is carried out with solvent-free hard-wax oils on a purely plant basis (linseed oil, safflower oil, and carnauba wax). This oil penetrates deep into the wood structure and hardens there, while the carnauba wax forms a semi-matte, dirt- and water-repellent protective layer on the surface. The wood remains diffusion-open, breathes, and contributes positively to regulating the room climate. Care and Value Retention in Exclusive Interiors
To ensure that the natural beauty and tactile advantages of oak wood remain unchanged for decades, minimal but professional care is required. In everyday life, dry cleaning with a soft dust cloth or gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment is fully sufficient. For damp cleaning, the cloth should only be slightly damp to prevent excessive water penetration into the wood. Strong household cleaners, chemical solvents, or abrasive substances must be avoided, as they can damage the protective hard-wax layer. For periodic refreshment after a few years, we recommend using a special maintenance wax that regenerates the surface, makes minor scratches invisible, and permanently preserves the silky shine of the oak.
